With Labor Day just around the corner, you are probably busy making plans to be away or maybe finalizing a get together with your family. With any vacation day, especially if a cookout is involved, being vigilant against pests is a key factor to ensure the cookout is a success.

So what pests are active at the moment? Pretty much everything is still in full swing but these are our top three pests to watch out for this coming Labor Day;

Ants

Ants come in different shapes and sizes from the small sugar ants to the larger carpenter ants. Like any pest they are looking for a food or water source. If there is a cookout taking place then this is an ideal time for ants to invade your space and try and get some of the food on offer.

Wasps, bees, and hornets are merrily buzzing on their way and doing their thing around the yard. From pollinating plant life to making nests for the next lot of stinging insects. Stinging insects can be annoying in that they are buzzing around you but they don’t generally mean any harm.

Roaches

Yup, cockroaches are pretty much active all year round but put some food on for them and they will be out in full force. They are after all looking for something to eat.  Cockroaches also come in different species but any roach is a bad roach.

What Can You Do About Pests This Labor Day?

Having a regular pest control service is always a good idea, not only does it help reduce the problem but it ensures the problem is kept under control.  As a homeowner there are some things you can do to reduce the number of pests in your yard;

  • Ensure your work area is clean of debris and crumbs. After preparation wipe down any counter space.
  • When dealing with food outside, again ensure the area is clear of food after you have finished eating.
  • Ensure any trash is in a sealed bag in the trash can.
  • Keep your yard trimmed.  Long grass is a perfect hiding place for many insects.  Also remove any weeds.  Insects love hiding in these too.
  • Have a regular check around your home’s foundation, windows and doors for any cracks or crevices where insects can get in.  All it takes is a tiny space for them to enter your home.
  • Reduce standing water areas – if you have any old trash in your yard then these are harborage areas for insects.

Don’t make it easy for pests to spoil your fun this Labor Day.  We have you covered year round with our maintenance plan.   Contact one of our offices for details or click the green envelope on the right.
